A question we are often asked is ‘Can I use my Malawi Chairs outdoors?’
Quite simply – yes! Absolutely. In Africa they are kept outside all the time.
All Malawi Cane pieces – including the iconic Malawi Chairs – are made of natural materials that are easily and readily accessible in Malawi.
The local hardwood, bamboo cane and water reeds used to make all our Malawi Cane pieces are endemic to Malawi – meaning they grow profusely and naturally.
Because our pieces are made of natural materials, they will weather over time if left out in the elements. This weathering creates some darker and lighter areas on the chairs, which looks absolutely stunning!
Malawi Cane pieces can be used outdoors in an open area, or outdoors undercover, in an alfresco space.
To prolong the life of your Malawi Cane pieces, we recommend:
- Regularly dusting them with a dry soft cloth. For spots a little harder to get to, use a soft bristle brush.
- If it’s raining, keep them undercover. It’s important to keep them dry and avoid a build-up of moisture and mildew. If they do get damp or wet, simply dry them out on a warm, sunny day when you next can.
- If there is heavy or prolonged periods of rain or humidity, we recommend bringing your pieces indoors during that time.

If you are unsure whether natural cane will suit your local environment – instead of a natural raw finish, consider opting for natural varnish or a painted colour finish.
